The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 (NATO reporting name: Fresco) is a high-subsonic fighter aircraft produced in the USSR from 1952 and operated by numerous air forces in many variants. It is an advanced development of the similar looking MiG-15 of the Korean War and was license-built in China as the Shenyang J-5 and in Poland as the PZL-Mielec Lim-6.

The early MiG-21F-13 design was exported and licensed to China which started its own development and production of derivatives, designated J-7 (F-7 for export), when Chengdu took over the J-7 production from Shenyang. The MiG-15 bis Fagot-B, the code name given by NATO, was the Soviet Union's first operational swept-wing jet fighter variant developed from the original MiG-15 design. Its maiden flight was in Sept.1949 and mass production began in 1952 with an estimated total of 3,000 produced. The only aircraft technically comparable was the F-86 Sabre and was able to meet the MiG on equal terms. During 1953 the USA offered a $ 100.000 bounty to any pilot who would defect with an intact aircraft.
